are ugly characters a big problem to you in video games?

The pure example of the only good-looking playable character in the entire EA game production is Alice: Madness Returns

…compared to all their other shitty games where all characters look like woke shit, especially in their latest Dragon Age / Mass Effect games.

So yes, the ugly woke characters on purpose in the current gaming industry are a cancer.

Can't these all be important? A character doesn't have to be pretty inherently but they have to be well designed along with the general aesthetics of a game need to look good, a story can matter but it's a game so gameplay is the primary over that.

If I see ugly looking characters, there's a good chance I'm not playing it. Give me cool looking guys and pretty looking girls in a game, you're gonna being seeing those characters for the entire game, better to make them appealing to look at then making them look like frankensteins. Besides, it takes way more effort to make a character look ugly than it is to make them look attractive.

I would enjoy a game with great gameplay but with ugly characters. I'd prefer for them not to be ugly, though.

@Kajiuran ye mine is like 60% gameplay while 40% characters and their beauty so gameplay wins my vote, im not much interested in story given i usually just casually play indie games that are rougelites

i'd prefer ugly characters with good personalities over good-looking characters with horrible personalities honestly
by horrible personality i don't mean that they're an asshole, i mean more-so that they're entirely unlikable. you can have bad characters be likable.
i guess that puts it into 'story is more important' for me i guess?

I do think that good looking characters can be a big appeal for some video games. Senran Kagura and Bullet Girls wouldn't be the same if the characters were ugly, for example
But for games like Dark Souls, it's great to be able to choose if you want to make a horrifying looking character or an attractive enough one

When our family got its first computer, possessing 32K of RAM and capable of displaying 8 colours and hence not even capable of rendering attractive characters, somehow I didn't go "no attractive characters, not interested!"

I'll put it this way; I would gladly play more things that didn't immediately distract me with at least one character I want to see naked....If non-Asian studios would put out more games I'd actually want to play. I thought I'd be safe with the newer Spider-man games, but damn it if that Black Cat outfit didn't get me even without the cleavage...Yes, it is possible to find an outfit hot without cheeks and cleavage peaking out. It's also possible to be attracted to a character in a western game. Mind blowing I know.

Side note; It's also possible to play Asian games for non-horny reasons. You think I played through the entire Yakuza series because I found the female characters attractive? In that whole series, I found two or three I really liked tops. Even with all the hostess mini games. I'm not counting those actual real life models they had that weren't even in every game to my knowledge.

Gameplay is always most important. It is the core and essence of the experience. Graphics forever will be subordinate to gameplay. Below gameplay is story, and below that is graphics.

The cases where this is not true are when games are trying to be something else, whether its movies (walking sims) or books (VN/Adventure) and 90% of games are not those. Appreciate beauty when it happens, but do not mistake it for the most important thing. We would be better off remembering this.

I mean, maybe? I don't think lacking sex appeal is the same as being ugly in the traditional sense. I do not need characters to be pretty, but I imagine being ugly could make me less interested in a game, usually. Part of this is due to graphical and design issues that are magnified with better graphics. At other times, being ugly can be the point. For example, this shitpost of a VN Phucker in the Ashes

The issue with Mass Effect: Andromeda seems to me less intentional and more of bad facial design in general. These don't look like any group of people I know regarding different body sizes and so forth, it just looks like bad design. Same with Veilguard. I think of course the models look pretty ugly, but I think this just bad design than any political agenda (Biases or Positions do not themselves constitute an agenda)

If the characters disgust me I will not buy the game. Conversly, I beat many games with mediocre gameplay for the cute girls and plot like Neptunia Game Maker.

Gameplay and story are most important, but I find it really weird that many AAA companies are making so many ugly characters.
It's not just 1 or 2 characters but a vast majority of them in some games. Therefore it's hard to tell if its intentional or if game devs at those studios
forgot how to make normal looking character models.

Depending on the game, if the game has an influence from the look of the characters like Gacha game or MMORPG or especialy games where you create a character than yes the ugly characters as forced option are the problem to me. Characters also make a lot for the game, think of Witcher series and how Geralt looks like, Ghost from Cod Mw 2, would they be the same if the characters would be uglier or design in other ways?
For me ugly characters/uglification should be an option, not a must, there's many people whom made for fun the ugliest possible characters in Mount and Blade series or MMORPGs.

But it can also being used in a good way, take a look at Sifu, your character gets more ugly because it gets older by each time you're dying, so if you want your character to be young than simply don't die.

First descendant has a hot korean chick they gave her out for free for Christmas. Gotta give the Blue archive devs some credit for that. Incentivised me to play the game more. Well i only had 200 hours because my ADHD brain got tired with the grinding lol.

And playing TFD made me had a higher Percentage playing 2024 games this year for the Steam replay surprisingly lol.

Gameplay first, characters fitting the universe well, and 'writing'. I don't care what characters look like but appealing ones are better than the animation and effort put into making them too realistic or suitable to 'that' audience or games being dumbed down because' can't do that'.

I don't go oh an artstyle or appealing characters but it makes the game easier to experience for sure then odd shadows/lighting or angles and going hmm nah.

Worlds need to be more playground like not dull and too much of barriers or empty. Fun level design, fun movesets, characters being well written enough and if have to be appealing, fine by me.
